From factories to laboratories, fixed gas detection provides continuous monitoring where portable devices fall short. Discover how Entec customises solutions for every site.
Fixed-point gas detection systems are permanent installations designed to continuously monitor gas levels across a wide range of environments—from commercial premises to heavy industrial facilities. These systems can be configured to detect single or multiple gases and scaled from single-room installations to site-wide networks with hundreds of sensors. They integrate seamlessly with existing or new safety systems, including Building Management Systems (BMS), and can support pre-entry checks for hazardous areas.
Applications are broad and varied, spanning automotive, aviation, battery manufacturing, boiler houses, bottling plants, breweries, chemical processing, energy production, electrical engineering, environmental protection, food and beverage, healthcare, HVAC, laboratories, motorsport, oil and gas, spray booths, pharmaceuticals, printing, packaging, and waste management.
Gas detection typically focuses on three main risk categories: flammable, toxic, and asphyxiant gases.
- Flammable gases such as methane, propane, hydrogen, and butane pose fire and explosion risks. Even a minor leak can result in an explosive atmosphere. Hazardous Area-approved fixed detection systems are essential in these high-risk environments.
- Toxic gases like carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, and chlorine can be lethal in high concentrations. Some are also flammable, requiring intrinsically safe detection solutions suitable for explosive atmospheres.
- Asphyxiants displace oxygen and include gases like nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide. Oxygen deficiency—or excess—can have severe safety implications, requiring constant monitoring.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are another critical risk. Used in countless industrial and commercial processes, VOCs can cause a range of health issues, including irritation, nausea, and even long-term organ damage. Benzene, a common VOC, is particularly challenging to monitor and requires advanced detection technologies to detect low parts-per-billion (ppb) concentrations in harsh conditions.
Fixed detection systems comprise sensors, sampling systems, control panels, alarms, lights, sounders, and digital or analogue outputs. Expert providers can customise these components to meet specific site requirements, integrating new technology with existing systems for a tailored solution.
Centralised or remote monitoring is often built in, enabling instant alerts, automatic shutdowns, ventilation activation, and hazard isolation when thresholds are exceeded. This real-time data capability enhances incident response and supports long-term compliance through data logging and analysis.
However, fixed systems aren’t suited to every scenario. They cannot accurately calculate Time-Weighted Average (TWA) exposure and may be cost-prohibitive compared to portable solutions. But they are ideal for:
- Continuous monitoring
- Pre-entry area checks
- Background contaminant measurement
- Locations where personal monitoring is impractical
- Environments with no viable portable alternatives
Each fixed system must be uniquely designed. A thorough site survey is essential to identify the gases to be monitored and any cross-contamination risks that could impact readings. Regular maintenance is critical to ensure long-term reliability, especially in harsh conditions that may degrade sensors.
Cloud-connected fixed systems are an emerging innovation, offering real-time data access via 4G uplink or integration with existing IT infrastructure. These systems can provide automatic alerts via SMS, email, or phone and may eliminate the need for an on-site control panel—delivering both operational and cost efficiencies.
Cloud-based solutions allow users to:
- Access historical and live data from anywhere
- Identify alarm origins and current gas levels
- Improve compliance and reporting
- Integrate with the industrial Internet of Things (IoT)
- Scale up with virtually unlimited sensors
Deployment is simple and cost-effective, often involving a one-time equipment investment and a monthly service fee that includes SIM data charges.
